Basement Waterproofing, Atlantic Hurricane Names

Is Your Basement Ready for Hurricane Season?

Here in the Mid-Atlantic, we don’t usually have to worry about creating an evacuation plan or boarding up our homes like our friends in Florida and the Carolinas do. But we do need to be prepared for the heavy rains that hurricanes and tropical storms can bring. Is your basement ready for hurricane season?

The 2021 Atlantic hurricane season started June 1st and goes until November 30th. Traditionally, September is the busiest month for hurricane activity.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts another above-normal hurricane season for 2021.  The good news is that it’s not expected to be as busy as last year’s record-breaking hurricane season. But NOAA officials remind us to take last season as a reminder to all of us in coastal regions or areas prone to inland flooding to be prepared.

Do You Need Basement Waterproofing?

For many people, being prepared for hurricane season means basement waterproofing. Many homes in our area that are older than 10 years old are prone to water intrusion in the basement.  New homes are not safe either!  Builders typically offer a 2-year warranty against water intrusion.  They perform damp proofing but do not have a warrantied solution for your basement.  Do not remodel your new home’s basement without making sure you are protected.

There are some tell-tale signs that you have already had water in your basement, even if you didn’t know it at the time. These are the signs that you need to consider professional basement waterproofing, sooner, rather than later:

  • Puddles of water on the floor or wet carpet
  • Efflorescence (a chalky substance on the walls)
  • Cracked basement walls or floor
  • Respiratory issues that won’t go away
  • A musty smell

If you see any of these signs in your basement, don’t delay. Schedule a FREE basement inspection.  If you are not sure if you have an effective sump pumping station or battery backup capability, please call us as well.

What Professional Basement Waterproofing Entails

Professional basement waterproofing typically entails installing a French drain system around the inside perimeter of your basement. This drainage system engages when necessary and manages the water, pumping it away from your foundation.

Waterproofing can include other services, such as:

  • Drilling weep holes and convection ports
  • Installing a vapor barrier on your walls
  • Replacing an existing window with a watertight egress window
  • Sealing wall and floor cracks
  • Foundation repair
  • Installing a proper floor, window, or stairwell drain
  • Installing a sump pump and battery backup sump pump

This sounds like a lot, but the whole process can be completed in just a few days and will give you peace of mind when the next big storm heads your way. We have had homeowners tell us that the sound of their sump pumps running during heavy rain is music to their ears.

We truly believe that professional basement waterproofing is one of the most important investments you can make in your home and your family’s well-being.
